Yoshi's Woolly World Special Course

  • Jun 25, 2015 Yoshi's Woolly World is a 2.5D side-scrolling game for the Wii U by Good-Feel. It is the fifth main platform game starring Yoshi and the first Yoshi home console game since Yoshi's Story. The game takes place in a handcrafted universe, similar to the one in Kirby's Epic Yarn, which was also developed by Good-Feel. It follows the adventure of a Yoshi tribe trying to pursue and defeat the evil.

Dec 11, 2016  Welcome to Yoshi's Woolly World! The purpose of this guide is to walk you through obtaining 100% completion in this game. It's not necessarily meant for those who just want to finish the main game, as the game was designed to be easy enough to beat on its own.

Yoshi

Twelve frames for a single second

To produce stop-motion animation, you position models by hand, take a photo, move them a bit, take another photo, and so on. You have to keep track of how Yoshi and the objects around him should be moving as you photograph frame by frame, so it’s a pretty painstaking process.

12 photos are needed to create one second’s worth of animation. Put the above photos together and what do you get?

Behind the scenes

Let’s take a look at what happens during the animation process. This is the set where the animation takes place. With all the tools and equipment around, it gets kind of cluttered.

If you look closely at the photos, you’ll see that Yoshi and his pals are held in place by metal clamps. These are called “rigs,” and they’re used to keep objects in the positions they need to be.

The many faces of Yoshi

Yoshi's Woolly World Shorts

During the shorts, you may have noticed how Yoshi has all sorts of different facial expressions. How do they do that?

Yoshi's Woolly World Special Course List

Here are some of the parts used for Yoshi’s eyes. These can be switched in-between frames to let Yoshi blink, change expressions, and more.

The Yoshi featured in the shorts looks a lot like the Yarn Yoshi amiibo figure, but it’s actually a little different.

See how the arms and legs are longer? Plus, there are metal joints embedded inside the stop-motion Yoshi model, which makes it stiff and heavy. Thanks to these joints, the animators are able to make Yoshi hold poses and move with precision.

Photographing frames, rigs and all

Check out the difference between the original photos and the versions used in the animation. The rigs used to keep things in place stay in the shot and are then edited out later. That’s right – stop motion may seem like an old-fashioned method of animation, but it actually involve some pretty state-of-the-art image editing.

Here’s a behind the scenes clip we got our hands on to show you what the animation looked like during production.

A message from the production team

Here’s a message from Mr. Minegishi at dwarf, the animation studio, who lent his expertise to producing these animations:

“Stop motion Yoshi acts in his own special way, a way that’s different to the Yoshi you typically see in games. We hope that players will enjoy seeing Yoshi in a brand new light.”

In-game features

The game contains 30 different animated shorts. Each day you can watch a new one, so you’ll probably want to try to play at least once a day. You’ll also get quizzed on the movies you watch. You can try to answer the questions correctly to get Beads that are sure to help Yoshi along the way!

The lovable Poochy, who appears in the shorts, will also be getting his very own amiibo figure (sold separately or as part of a special bundle with Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World). It doesn’t move like Poochy does in the animated videos, but by scanning it at any time during a course you can call Poochy to your side, letting you continue the adventure with a faithful companion.

So if you ever need a little break from platforming in Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World, you can check out the stop-motion animated shorts! You can check out some of the videos and learn more about the game at the official Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World website.

<<List of levels>>

Naval Piranha 2: Now It's Personal! is the final level of World 4 in Yoshi's Woolly World. It is unlocked after collecting all forty previous Smiley Flowers in the world.

  • 2Collectibles

Layout[edit]

The level begins in an area with many vines. Once Yoshi reaches an Egg Block, Naval Piranha appears and gives chase. Yoshi will then encounter a few Shy Guys on Item Balloons, and then Piranha Plants on trampolines. After a while, Koopa Paratroopas also appear. More trampolines appear after that, as well as a slightly faster autoscroll. After a segment of trampolines and sponge dirt, a slighty faster autoscroll engages. Before long, Yoshi will reach another trampoline, causing the autoscroll to move even faster. Yoshi must then quickly eat the Shy Guys on Item Balloons to fill in the platforms, then continue past the sponge dirt and trampolines, followed by an area with spiky vines and Piranha Plants, followed by the final trampoline leading to the goal roulette.

Collectibles[edit]

Smiley Flowers[edit]

  • Smiley Flower 1: In a hidden Winged Cloud just after the first two Shy Guys on Item Balloons.
  • Smiley Flower 2: In an alcove too narrow for Yoshi to enter. To get it, Yoshi must eat a Koopa Paratroopa and spit out its shell into the alcove so that it can run into the Smiley Flower.
  • Smiley Flower 3: In a hidden Winged Cloud at a vine almost immediately after the second Wonder Wool.
  • Smiley Flower 4: In some sponge dirt immediately after the fourth Wonder Wool.
  • Smiley Flower 5: Just before the final trampoline, just over a Piranha Plant. Yoshi must throw a yarn ball at it to collect it.

Wonder Wools[edit]

  • Wonder Wool 1: Just above a Piranha Plant on a trampoline. Yoshi must simply flutter jump to get it.
  • Wonder Wool 2: At the top left of three rows of sponge dirt.
  • Wonder Wool 3: Up and to the left of a trampoline immediately after an Egg Block, just before the faster autoscroll.
  • Wonder Wool 4: Revealed just after filling in the second platform after the faster autoscroll.
  • Wonder Wool 5: In a patch in the ground near the final vine before the goal roulette.

Collecting all of the Wonder Wools knits Nintendo 64 Yoshi back together.
