It's always a joy when Yoshi gets to get out of the saddle and leave his pal Mario behind for one of his own games, and Woolly World is a particularly inventive treat.
Although essentially similar to the 2D platforming Yoshi-led games that have come before it, Woolly World takes a unique aesthetic and turns it into some incredible gameplay ideas.
Woolly World, like its name suggests, see Yoshi and his surroundings made out of all sorts of fabrics, from felt platforms to threaded balls. Enemies can be unwrapped like a thread bobbin - as can areas of the levels, revealing secrets at the same time - and Yoshi can rearrange his yarn body into all manner of shapes, from a floaty helicopter propellor to a motorbike.
It's wonderful to look at and full of clever takes on established Nintendo characters and enemies, even if a single clever idea carries an entire level for too long.
Still, quality Nintendo Wii U games aren't exactly piling up at the moment and Yoshi's Woolly World has enough refreshing ideas to make it more than worth unravelling.
